ANNUAL EVENTS
Freshman Parent Night
Time frame: within the first two weeks of September
Details: School administration and the school counselors host Freshman Parent Night. The evening serves to introduce parents to the high school and school counseling department. It will offer insight into the high school as a whole and the role counselors play in a student’s life. Topics discussed include key policies at the high school, the importance of engaging in high school life and the role of the counseling department. The evening begins in the auditorium and then parents will meet in a smaller group with their child’s school counselor.
"The College Application Process - Keeping it in Perspective"
Time frame: September
Details: The School Counseling Department is happy to host Senior Parent Night. It is an evening presentation for seniors and their parents to learn about the college search and selection process at Hingham High School. Topics discussed will include the application process at HHS, recommendations, testing, what colleges and universities look for when reviewing the high school transcript and a brief overview of financial aid. The goal of the night is to provide insight into the process and help to guide families through this trying yet exciting time.
Financial Aid Night
Time frame: October
Details: As the cost of education after high school—and just about everything else—goes up each year, many parents wonder how they can pay educational bills. In fact, costs continue to rise each year. To assist parents in applying for financial aid, the School Counseling Department will host a representative from MEFA, the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority, in December. The presentation will address all areas of financial aid and will review the method of completing financial aid forms such as the FAFSA, the CSS/Profile, and the Hingham High School Scholarship Application. If your child is a senior, the evening should help you understand how financial aid works and what steps you have to take right now to apply for assistance from many different sources. If your child is not yet a senior, you can get valuable information to help you plan ahead for financing higher education when the time comes.
"Navigating High School": A Student Panel
Time frame: October or November
Details: Traditionally this has been a night for sophomores, but really any student making their way through high school can benefit from hearing about the experiences of others. When thinking about high school, it is a time of transition. Students are trying to figure out who they are and the course they should take. Often, we have juniors and seniors who chat with us and tell us they wish they had some more advice and perspective earlier in their high school career. We think it is valuable discussion and have created this evening to give all students and their parents a chance to hear directly from upperclassmen on a variety of subjects from academics to managing activities to connecting with teachers and staff.
College Kickoff Night
Time frame: December
Details: The School Counseling Department is happy to host College Kickoff Night. It is an evening presentation geared for juniors and their parents to learn about the college search and selection process. Students and parents in other grades are welcome to attend as well. A presentation from MEFA, the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority will be the focus of the evening. Topics include current trends in admissions, factors that impact the admissions decision, the campus visit, the admissions interview, the essay, and preliminary steps in the college financing process.
